Iannis (Yannis) Zervas, MD, is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He is the Director of the Women’s Mental Health Clinic and Director of the Interpersonal Psychotherapy and Schema Therapy Unit at Eginition Hospital, First Department of Psychiatry of the University of Athens Medical School. He is also the. He has received his MD and his doctorate degree from the University of Athens and was trained in Psychiatry and Consultation Liaison Psychiatry and Psychosomatic Medicine and Clinical Research at Stony Brook University Hospital, SUNY Medical School in New York, USA. While in NY he also completed training in psychotherapy. Over the past decade he has been involved in psychiatry of the female reproductive cycle and his research has mostly focused on mood and anxiety of the perinatal and the perimenopausal phases. He has published over 70 articles in peer-reviewed international journals and over 60 scientific articles and book chapters for the Greek audience. He is co-editor of the Liaison Psychiatry Textbook (Athens, 2009). His h-index is 15 and citation index 650. He is on the editorial board of the Psychiatriki journal of the Hellenic Psychiatric Association and president of the Women’s Mental Health Section of the same Association. He is also co-chairman of the WFSBP section on Women’s Mental Health. He reviews for several scientific journals and is a member of various scientific societies, among which the Marce Society, the American Psychiatric Association, the Hellenic American Psychiatric Association and the Hellenic College of Academic Psychiatry. His current research focuses on antepartum anxiety and depression, stress effects on women, and the relation between insomnia and depression in perimenopause.
Areti C. Spyropoulou, MD is an Assistant Director at the Women’s Mental Health Clinic of Eginition Hospital, First Department of Psychiatry of the University of Athens Medical School. She obtained her MD in 1992 from the Medical University of Patras. She subsequently received a scholarship from the National Scholarship Foundation (IKY) to pursue postgraduate studies in Psychosomatic Medicine at the University of Cambridge (UK) and graduated in 2001 with a Master of Philosophy for her research on the "Study of the influence of emotional states and personality traits in memory recognition. Her doctoral thesis focused on the “Investigation of symptoms ghost state in women who have undergone mastectomy” conducted at the Medical School of Athens University.
She has teached a variety of mental health-related classes in a variety of graduate programs including the Clinical Psychology and the Nursing program at the University of Athens as well as at the University of Cyprus. She currently serves as a trainer in the psychiatry residency training program at the University of Athens.
Angeliki A. Leonardou, MD, is a Psychiatrist, Psychotherapist and Assistant Director at the Women’s Mental Health Clinic at Eginition Hospital, First Department of Psychiatry of the University of Athens Medical School.
She earned her MD in 1994 from the University of Athens and her doctorate degree from the First Psychiatric Clinic of the University of Athens, at Eginition Hospital, where she also completed her psychiatry residency. Throughout her specialty training, she has also worked in the capacity of a research associate and clinical specialist at the Perinatal Psychiatry Department of the Maudsley Hospital, London. Dr. Leonardou completed her doctoral studies in the field of postnatal depression, as her doctorate thesis aimed at validating a psychometric tool for accurately identifying postpartum depression in the Greek population.
Dr. Leonardou has served as an author in several scientific books and articles related to mental health. She has been taking part in the training of the residents of Eginition Hospital over the last 15 years. She has also been significantly involved in launching the Women's Mental Health Clinic, since 2003, and IPT training program, since 2005, at Eginition Hospital. As a clinical therapist, she trained in Cognitive Psychotherapy as well as in Interpersonal Psychotherapy under the supervision of Dr. Lena Verdeli through Columbia University. She is a member of the Hellenic Society of Systemic Thinking and Psychotherapy, since 2003, and of the Hellenic Society of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, since 2008. She serves as the medical supervisor of the IPT training program of the First University Psychiatric Clinic, and she is also the Secretary of the Section of Women’s Mental Health of Hellenic Psychiatric Society.
Eleni Vousoura, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Psychology at Deree University and a clinical and research associate at the Women’s Mental Health Clinic at Eginition Hospital, First Department of Psychiatry of the University of Athens Medical School. She earned her PhD in clinical psychology from Columbia University and her doctoral dissertation investigated the impact of psychological distress among mothers on child health and nutritional status in rural, low-resource areas in sub-Saharan Africa.
Her scholarly interests lie in developing culturally-sensitive assessment tools and psychosocial interventions for common mental health disorders in at risk, underserved populations globally. She conducts research at the Women’s Mental Health Clinic at Eginition Hospital and the Global Mental Health Lab at Columbia University, specializing in women’s reproductive health issues, parent-child attachment, and child adjustment.
Her clinical training is broad-based, ranging from community and college counseling settings to hospital outpatient clinics and inpatient medical and psychiatric facilities. She trained in Interpersonal Psychotherapy with Dr. Lena Verdeli through Columbia University. She leads the IPT training program at Eginition Hospital and provides clinical supervision for mental health professionals under training.
Elizabeth Foskolos, MA, is a Doctoral Candidate at the Department of Psychiatry of the University of Athens Medical School and a clinical and research associate at the Women’s Mental Health Clinic. Her doctoral thesis is investigating the feasibility of interpersonal therapy for treating perinatal depression in a sample of Greek women, as well as a series of biomarkers as potential predictors of the treatment outcome.
Her research interests focus on evidence-based strategies for quality improvement in women’s mental healthcare delivery in low-resource settings, worldwide. She earned her MA in Clinical Psychology from Columbia University. She has completed her internship at the World Health Organization (WHO), in the capacity of a research assistant for the field studies for the development of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11).
Ms. Foskolos has also worked as a clinical and research associate at Payne Whitney Women’s Program, in the Department of Psychiatry at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, which provides comprehensive care for mental health concerns that are unique to women. As a research associate, she served as a data-coordinator in a study standardizing a psychometric tool for depressed pregnant women in Qatar. She is currently involved in research projects at the Women’s Mental Health Clinic and the Global Mental health lab at Columbia University. She is training in Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) under the supervision of Dr. Lena Verdeli through Columbia University and she is member of the board of directors of the IPT training program at Eginition Hospital.
Chrysoula Ekizoglou, M.Sc., is a Midwife, a Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and a Perinatal Psychologist. For the past 12 years, she has been working in private practice as a midwife, supporting mothers throughout the perinatal period and has collaborated with various hospitals and OB/GYN physicians.
She earned her MSc. On Pathology of Pregnancy from the University of Athens/School of Medicine. At the same time, she completed her undergraduate studies in psychology at the University of Athens.Over the past six years, she has been collaborating with the Women's Mental Health and Perinatal Psychiatry Clinic of the University of Athens, at Eginition Hospital, where she has been practicing both occupations, midwifery and psychology.
Ms. Ekizoglou is further specialized in psychoanalytic infant observation, psychoanalytic observation of parent – toddler groups, mother-infant psychotherapy, and video interaction guidance (VIG). She is currently exploring the use of VIG throughout the perinatal period, for the purposes of her doctoral thesis. Finally, she is a scientific collaborator at the Institute of Child Health.
Eirini Sideri MD, MSc, is a Psychiatrist, Existential Systemic Psychotherapist and Clinical and Research Associate at the Women’s Mental Health Clinic at Eginition Hospital, First Department of Psychiatry of the University of Athens Medical School.
She earned her MD from the University of Athens in 2002 and obtained her Master of Science In Molecular Medicine in the field of Neurobiology in 2007. During period 2007-2013 she was under therapeutic and training process in Existential Systemic Therapy at the therapeutic and training institute Antistixi. In 2015 she completed her psychiatry residency at the First Psychiatric Clinic of the University of Athens at Eginition Hospital. She is a scientific collaborator of therapeutic and training institute Antistixi. Additionally, she practices privately Existential Systemic Psychotherapy and more specifically personal therapy, family therapy, couples therapy and group therapy. She is associated with the Greek Systemic Therapy Association (ELESYTH).
